Trust Me On The Sunscreen

Who remembers this song?

Also, remember when I talked about too much of a good thing the other day? Well peeps, this is why you wear sunscreen...

Yep. Just had an "atypical spot" surgically removed on Wednesday. I initially had the spot biopsied, but the results were atypical and the spot CAME BACK. Time for phase two--cut that b*tch out.

I didn't plan on having that many stitches (only supposed to be one or two), but that's just how the cookie crumbles I guess. I had to scramble to find subs for my Kick and Zumba classes because the doctor said "none of that biz until Monday!" Ha--so here I was complaining about 9 classes on Monday, and it ends up that I HAVE to get subs for some of them. Careful what you wish for!

It's only natural that today we real talk about the largest organ of the body--skin. I don't care if you're a man, woman, child, unicorn or Gonzo--protecting your skin is important! When I think about my historical use of sun protection, my memory becomes hazy--summers spent by the pool in my backyard or outdoors working the garden, or even *gasp* hours tanning outside. I can't remember a lick of sunscreen on my shoulders. Not saying that enjoying sun with reckless abandon is what caused this, but I suspect that this spot is my own fault.

This cat is enjoying some sun with reckless abandon.

Just this week, Australian researchers released study results that quantified how much sunscreen protects your skin. The research project, conducted over two decades, shows "proof" of photo aging. CHECK OUT THE PICS HERE! CrayCray.

So what sunscreen to use!?!? The Skin Cancer Foundation has an excellent article that explains SPF and common myths associated with sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that at the bare minimum, your sunscreen should be:
  • SPF 30 or higher
  • Broad spectrum (protection against UVA and UVB Rays)
  • Water resistant
Lucky for us all, I recently ordered myself a Sephora Sun Safety Kit ($30). Every year Sephora puts one of these out and they are usually an insane value, and so they sell out FAST. I always buy one so that I have lots of sunscreen for my summer adventures (a.k.a. yard work) :)

This is what it looked like before I voraciously tore it open like a makeup-hungry T-Rex.

I'm not in love with all of the products in this sample bag, so I'm just going to review the top five (in my opinion). I also have links to them on Sephora if you'd like more info on the products. Most of these are face sunscreens/make up, though I've applied one of them to my chest and shoulders.

Roll call...

#5 Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 40

This stuff smells great, is light and non-greasy. It's full of "natural" ingredients (aloe, pomegranate, apricot oil, etc.) My only complaint: it's not water or sweat proof. Still, a good everyday (or evening) moisturizer. Argan oil is pretty amazing stuff!

#4 Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+

This cream is impenetrable! It's really thick, but not greasy at all. You just have to rub it in for what seems like forever and a day. This one is just for the face, but Shiseido makes one for the face and body. I tried this one on my chest and shoulders when I was out doing yard work and it worked just fine. Probably not a good sunscreen for everyday wear (and everyday moisturizing), but it would be awesome for all-day outdoor events. It's sweat and water-resistant--major pluses!

#3 Boscia Self-Defense Vital Antioxidant Moisture SPF 30

Light, everyday moisturizer. I liked the scent too. Reminds me of a spa :) It doesn't seem to be very water/sweat resistant, but it's a great moisturizer under make up. Good for acne-prone and sensitive skin (mine!) since it's free of alcohol, fragrances, preservatives, and artificial coloring.

#2 Miracle Skin Transformer SPF 20

Okay, so this isn't really a sunscreen--it's a BB Cream (make up), but it's DAMAZING (damn amazing)! If you are looking for one-stop shopping make up, you need to stock up on this stuff. It literally makes your face flawless. Pores? POOF GONE. Blemishes? TRIPLE POOF GONE. It feels velvety on the skin and is sweat proof. I tested this baby back in October (it came in my Birchbox), and I bought a full size version. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

#1 Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion

This is my #1 because it's straight up AWESOMENESS in a pump bottle. Perfect blend of moisturizer, anti-aging ingredients and not to mention super duper sweat proof and oil free. I'm slightly obsessed with PTR products but this is my favorite. GREAT for all skin types. A bit pricey, but soooo worth it.

So there you have it! Just a few of my favs. So my question for you is...

What are some of your favorite sun-protection products (make up, moisturizer or just plain ol' sunscreen)? Do you wear sunscreen everyday?
