It's Time to PARRRR-TAY!

I hope your Saturday was/is marvelous!

I woke up bright and squirrelly at 5:30am to get to the Group Fitness Launch Party at the YWCA where I teach. If you've never heard of the YWCA, check it out here. Our local YWCA just happens to also have a health and fitness program (gym, aquatics program, and group fitness program).

Every so often, we have "launch parties," where we launch new class formats, new choreography, and new music. The classes are free, so participants can bring friends and local community members can attend.

I love teaching at the YWCA. Not only because the participants ROCK, but also because their main non-profit mission is to empower women and eliminate racism in local communities. As a feminist (uh oh, I broke out the F-bomb!), these are activist causes I fully support.

Here's a small re-cap of my morning PAR-TAY...

At 6:30am--A fruit smoothie and water To-Go.

"B Tropical" Fruit Smoothie (makes 2 servings or 1 very large)
-1 low-fat vanilla yogurt cup
-1 frozen banana
-1/2 cup frozen tropical fruit (I bought a huge mixed bag of mango, pineapple, and strawberries at Walmart)
-1 cup milk (I used Almond Milk b/c it's creamy!)
-Sweetner to taste (I used Splenda, but you could also use honey)

I came early to take Zumba with Erin. It was a fab turnout--we had like 23 people crammed in there!

At launch parties, we always have snacks and freebies. Check out this spread, yo! :) Is that donuts?!?! Why yes it is! We all need a little carb/sugar pick-me-up in the early AM.

Our "Outdoor Kit" freebie. I tried my darndest to get a clear picture but my camera wasn't having any of it! This little cutie has 2 band-aids, 2 mini-packs of sunscreen, and a first aid guide. Perfect for the purse!

I taught PiYo (a pilates/yoga choreographed format) this morning. I made some "tips" posters for newcomers to yoga and pilates.

This was taken post-class craziness! We had something like 23 people in my PiYo class. The room was packed full of mats and chicas! I had my all-black attire on today. When it comes to Yoga, it's slimming! ;)

I came home just in time to witness my dishwasher on FIRE. It was literally smoking! The culprit...a spatula that slipped out and got caught in the burner. Good thing we were home to catch it! Our apartment could have burned down :(

450 degress my a**!

After the dishwasher fiasco, I settled into some lunch. I'm a creature of habit, so I had portobella mushrooms again. This time in a wrap, though!

Low carb tortilla filled with marinated, grilled and sliced portobella, spinach, tomato, mozzarella, and honey mustard. Fresh and delish.

I then crashed into a FOUR HOUR POWER NAP, which I just woke up from! Two hours of an early morning workout takes it out of ya!

Some tips for early morning exercisers:
  • Eat a small snack (about 100-150 calories). Since your body has been in "fasting" mode all night, this will provide the energy you need to get through your workout and will jump-start your metabolism.
  • If doing cardio (running, high-impact sports or fitness), make that snack a carbohydrate of some kind (mini-bagel or granola bar for example). This will insure that your body has the energy to get through the first 20 minutes of your workout.
  • If you're not a morning person, sleep in your workout clothes. This makes it more likely for you to jump out of bed and head to the gym with no excuses.
  • As soon as you wake up, drink a full glass of water to prevent dehydration.
  • Find a routine that works for you. The hardest part about early morning workouts is getting out of bed. After that, it's easy. After a week of morning workouts, your body and sleep cycle naturally begin to fall into a routine, which makes the "getting out of bed" part easier.
  • Go to bed a little bit earlier than you usually do. That extra 30 min to an hour of sleep makes a huge difference in the REM cycle!
  • When in doubt (or NECESSITY) a little caffeine goes a long way. I set my coffee pot timer the night before to have coffee ready, so I can drink it on my way to the gym. Ain't no shame in a little caffeinated kick! :)

Just chilling and watching a movie tonight...being generally low-key and boring :) Have a relaxing Sunday ya'll!

Q.O.D. (question of the day): What causes are you passionate about? What tips do you have for working out in the early AM?

  1. I wish I was closer to you b/c I would have loved to attend that launch. How fun. MMMMMM portobellos..... I have 4 in the fridge right now begging to be used. I am actually passionate about breed-specific dog rescue organizations. I found both of my furbabies from Cocker Spaniel rescues.

  2. Love the morning workout tips. I do most of them and they certainly help. The launch at the gym sounds like a lot of fun. Glad it was a big success!
